William Morris (English, 1834-96), a renowned writer, designer and practicing Socialist, was a lifelong opponent of mass production. Believing that art should find expression in utilitarian objects that could be enjoyed as part of everyday life, Morris worked in a wide range of fields including textiles, furniture, tiles, glass and wallpaper. He designed his first wallpaper in 1864, and over thirty-two years he completed forty-nine wallpaper designs, almost all using floral, fruit, or foliage motifs.
The Hyacinth design has been adapted from a design in a wallpaper sample book from Morris and Company which is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum. Cynthia Gale creates jewelry designs which celebrate Morris’ vision, resulting in a wearable tribute that complements the Brooklyn Museum’s collection.
